Before you add website analytics: a preparation checklist

Oct 30, 2026 5 mins read

Questions to consider about purpose, access, privacy and interpreting website activity.

Website analytics can be more useful when the questions and responsibilities are clear before tracking begins. Preparation also means checking the technical and privacy requirements that apply to the site.

Decide what you need to understand

Identify a few practical questions. For example: which pages are people visiting, how are they finding the site and how does activity change over time? A focused question helps determine which information is relevant and avoids collecting data without a clear purpose.

Review the software and access

Use a trustworthy, properly licensed package and a supported hosting environment. Decide who should administer the application, who needs access to reports and how credentials will be managed. Test the setup before relying on it.

Consider privacy before collection

Review the cookies or similar technologies involved, the information collected, retention settings and any consent or disclosure requirements that apply to your situation. Publish reviewed policy information and configure appropriate choices before enabling tracking. Seek qualified advice where needed; this checklist is not legal advice.

Interpret reports in context

A rise or fall in activity does not explain itself. Look at the period, sources, pages and any relevant changes to the site before drawing a conclusion. Treat a report as the start of an investigation rather than proof of a cause.

Current Amilma status: Amilma Analytics is in preparation. Its application and administrator account are not installed, and tracking is not available yet. Visit the Analytics overview for the current setup information.
